Slideshow of works produced in the Peter Bialobrzeski workshop

German photographer and former World Press Photo judge Peter Bialobrzeski has been in Manila for 4 weeks taking pictures of the cityscape for a project called “Urban Spaces”. The city is his 5th stop in a series of residencies in Southeast Asia. Prior to Manila, he was in Hanoi, Bangkok, Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur.
During his stay, he has also been conducting workshops for a select group of Philippine photographers. On Tuesday, workshop participants Estan Cabigas, Gigie Cruz, Tammy David, Kidlat de Guia, Che Katigbak, Cathy Quiogue, Dennis Rito and Cris Sevilla will be presenting the projects that they worked on during the workshop. All deal will various aspects of urbanity. The photos will be included in a Goethe-Institut exhibit that will be travelling around Southeast Asia later this year.
To see the entire collection of photographs, talk to the photographers and meet Bialobrzeski, head to Silverlens Gallery on February 26 for a slideshow of all the photographers’ works. The event starts at 6pm.
In cooperation with Silverlens Gallery and the Konrad Adenauer Asian Center for Journalism. For more information, please visit call 8170978 or visit Goethe Institut Manila.

24 February 2008 20:46A very interesting topic. But to be honest I was a bit disappointed by the workshop pictures posted in PDF on the Goethe Institut Website.
Manila, as a mega city, has much more exciting cityscapes to offer than what I saw in this PDF presentation.
I even don’t understand the relationship between urban cityscapes and Tammy David’s entry.
I hope stronger work will be shown in Silverlens Gallery.
Sorry that I am so honest in my judgment but this is a topic that lies close to my heart. Manila & cityscapes.

3 March 2008 2:46Hi Sidney. Peter gave us the theme Urbanity and I chose to stick with my current project “Crown and Country” Peter approved my story since it is part of Urbanity.

3 March 2008 9:41Hi Tammy.
Nothing personal.
I saw your pictures about “Crown and Country” (on your personal web page)and they are powerful and strong. Amazing stuff. Excellent work done on this theme, no doubt about it.
Maybe I should not have reacted the way I did since I don’t exactly know the assignment you got from Peter.
I am a foreigner & alien in this city. It so different from my home town that I am really fascinated and in awe with the urban landscapes I see here in Manila. The surprising mix in architecture, the buildings, the open spaces, the web of streets, etc.
In fact recording the urban landscapes in a city like Manila should be every photographer’s wet dream. This city is as fascinating as New York, Paris, London, Amsterdam… different but captivating.
I still think that with such an interesting theme the images that were posted on the Goethe Institute website are a bit meager. Maybe they should have posted more pictures from every photographer and allow the viewer a better understanding of your respective work you did on “urbanity”.
I guess you guys attended this workshop out of interest and since it is promoted by the Goethe Institut and Silverlens Gallery you could expect some critical questions and remarks…

4 March 2008 20:53Glad you did.
The previous presentation from the Goethe Institute was completely silly (and of bad quality).
Now at least the series are making sense and you see what each photographer wanted to highlight in Metro Manila.
Will you post some pictures taken by Peter? I am curious to see how he (as a short time visitor/foreigner & photographer)perceived Manila.
