Start of Series 49: Malate market vendors
I was walking down the streets near the nightlife mecca that is Malate in Manila one lazy afternoon for a documentary portrait photography workshop assignment and I stumbled upon the area’s wet and dry market.
The market was undergoing renovations and the vendors were setting up shop outside, taking over the short stretch of road just beside it.
I’m really a shy person that approaching these people to get their portraits was done with trepidation. At first, I was a bit nervous but once they obliged, it was smooth sailing from then on.
While one or two denied my request for a photo, the rest gamely posed and smiled. One of them, this beautiful vendor was somewhat out of place. Her dress was bright and colorful. Light makeup was on her cheeks and lips reddened slightly with her lipstick while fancy earings dangled from her ears. She was tending her small kariton (cart) of equally colorful vegetables.
She’s a graceful and beautiful woman brightening up the market with her charm.
