Night photography in Mactan

With nothing to do last Sunday night, I got in touch with two other photo enthusiasts, Wantet and B2y, of Flickr Cebu-Sugbo and we agreed to meet for a photoshoot at M Fernan Bridge off Mactan even if it was already late at around 2200H. I’ve been to this place before. This time, the place was not much brighter but there were still people enjoying the view, singing songs while lovers were taking their private space in the dimly lit areas. With our tripods, we started taking photos.

With nothing to do last Sunday night, I got in touch with two other photo enthusiasts, Wantet and B2y, of Flickr Cebu-Sugbo and we agreed to meet for a photoshoot at M Fernan Bridge off Mactan even if it was already late at around 2200H. With our tripods, we started taking photos.

Night photography is not that easy especially if its quite dim. First, one has to contend with the focusing. Autofocus usually fails in this situations since there is a tendency to hunt and most of the time, the camera can’t really make it that’s why doing it manually is the best and faster option.

Second, exposure should be considered. Since we have tripods, we opted to have the lowest ISO, usually at 100 and ample aperture. The problem was most of the time, the shutter speed does not suffice even if its already at 30 seconds that we had to resort with BULB.

Third, because there are marked differences between very bright and very dark areas, multiple exposures were made: Bracketing was done where the shutter/aperture combination permitted or when we used BULB, several exposures of different intervals were made.

However, once you get past these inconveniences, night photography is satisfying as the images you’ll get is quite different with those you get during daytime.
